Britain's Amir
Khan is no quitter in his pursuit to fight pound-for-pound champion Floyd
Mayweather Jr., saying he's guaranteed to face the undefeated American boxer
next if he would be able to beat IBF welterweight titlist Devon Alexander later
this year.
Khan said he believes a fight against
Mayweather is inevitable and it could happen sooner than expected if he can
defeat another pound-for-pound fighter in Alexander.
"If
I win my next fight [in December], it's Floyd Mayweather fight. I've been
guaranteed that. I've got one more obstacle to pass against Alexander and I'll
get Mayweather fight," said Khan, who's coming off victories against
Carlos Molina (10th round TKO) and Julio Diaz (Unanimous decision).
Although nothing
is guaranteed yet, the Khan-Alexander showdown could happen somewhere
in December under Golden Boy Promotions with the winner of the bout having a
chance to earn big money against Mayweather.
But several analysts, including Scott Gilfoid of Boxingnews 24, thinks
the Khan-Mayweather fight would never happen even if the Briton managed to beat
Alexander in December. He believes the track record of Khan, a loser of two of
his four fights, could affect his chances of securing a fight with Mayweather.
Gilfoid said Khan's so-so boxing slate (28 wins and 3 losses with 19 KOs ) might give a negative impression to pay-per-view
buyers that the Briton fighter is another product of dubious matchmaking.
Setting the
mediocre record aside, Gilfoid believes Khan-Mayweather is a more decent fight
than last May's Mayweather-Guerrero bout because of the Briton's ability to
match the speed and quickness of the American boxer.
Mayweather will
fight Saul Canelo Alvarez in a light middleweight showdown on September 14 at MGM Grand Garden in Las
Vegas , Nevada .
