Rolls-Royce ‘Optimistic’ on Agreeing Energy Unit Sale to Siemens

Rolls-Royce Holdings Group Plc (RR/) said there’s a good chance that it will agree a sale of most of its energy unit to Siemens AG as part of a plan to revive sales growth and focus on businesses where it’s a major player.

“I’m reasonably optimistic that we’ll get something done,” Chief Executive Officer John Rishton told reporters at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in London, adding that the power arm is “sub-scale” and can’t effectively compete with either the German company or General Electric Co. (GE:US)

Rolls-Royce is negotiating with Siemens on the disposal of operations that supply equipment derived from its core aero-engine product line to the oil and gas industry and power utilities. Both dressed in black but Mourinho — in his tracksuit — was far more insouciant and relaxed as he perched on the edge of his dugout as if everything was going to plan... until it went badly wrong for Chelsea. Simeone, the Argentine with a Spanish team but a hint of an English approach, micromanaged every second as he ordered his players around the pitch, cajoling and instructing. He did not let up as the high-intensity contest unfolded and he dominated Mourinho.

The Atlético striker is Chelsea’s No 1 transfer target this summer and he was a dangerous, brooding presence at the Bridge. In the first leg he showed his spirit by squaring up to John Terry and he was not fazed by the Chelsea defenders on Wednesday night. His movement was dangerous as he ran the line although he often played off Terry’s shoulder, hoping to exploit any fitness doubts. The hosts were stretched to the limit to contain him and his directness provided a constant threat. He took his penalty with aplomb. His link play, also, was intelligent and he would appear an ideal signing for Mourinho. Whatever the price. The bidding is expected to start at around £31.5 million — his buy-out clause.

Fortune favours the brave So much talk had centred on two sides who could nullify each other’s threat. Two sides set up in mirror image. Two sides who would depend on the counter-attack. Atlético demolished that theory. They were swift and brave and took the fight to Chelsea and would not be intimidated. Once behind, they hit back immediately and then sensed Chelsea’s vulnerability. They did not need to score a second goal but Simeone urged them on in the hope of killing the tie and Atlético were rewarded as Diego Costa’s speed earned them a penalty. Atlético had dominated from the second-half restart and reaped their reward. Simeone did not want to risk the game going into the final quarter with Chelsea needing just one goal.

Chelsea pay price for loaning CourtoisChelsea had hoped to reap a £5 million fee for their on-loan goalkeeper being allowed to play against them in this semi-final but that was vetoed by Uefa. Courtois was a spectator in the first leg but he produced two outstanding saves on Wednesday night to deny Chelsea as he brilliantly got down low to push away John Terry’s header and then excelled himself even further by finger-tipping David Luiz’s effort onto the woodwork. Outstanding. Will Chelsea recall him next season? Possibly not but they must always have feared that the 21-year-old Belgian would play a vital part in this tie and he did just that.

Time is finally up for Torres 
It has never worked for Torres. He has to be sold this summer. Rarely has the £50  million striker made an impact for Chelsea and just as it looked as though, finally, he would make a decisive impact in a big match it was cancelled out by his former club’s impressive response. Torres did score but his contribution was minimal overall, especially when Chelsea needed him most. Oddly he did not celebrate the goal either — OK it was against his former club but he needed to acknowledge the occasion. It summed up his fading presence and this simply cannot continue. With Chelsea needing two goals he was withdrawn. It said it all.

Sheikh mansoor, Manchester city's owner. has reportedly sanctioned a move for Chelsea's veteran midfielder Frank Lampard, for his Australian league club Melbourne Heart.

David Woods of the Daily Star writes that Mansour wants to make the midfielder a high-profile signing for the club he bought an 80 percent stake in last January for £6.7 million.

Lampard is out of contract at the end of the season and is already being courted by LA Galaxy.

Melbourne are offering £60,000 a week after tax for two years, with the option of a third year.

Dani Alves helps in kicking out racism out of football.

The racist incident took place as the player was about to take a corner in a match at Villarreal on Sunday.

Alves responded by peeling and eating the banana - which received praise worldwide and sparked a large social media campaign against racism.

The man detained has been identified as a 26-year-old Villarreal supporter.

He has been named as David Campaya Lleo, local media say.

The club said earlier the man involved had had his season ticket withdrawn and been given a lifetime ban.

The Barcelona defender expressed his surprise at the outpouring of support in the wake of the banana affair. His team eventually won the match 3-2, at Villareal's El Madrigal stadium in Castellon on Spain's east coast.

Alves told BBC Brasil on Wednesday it was "not an isolated incident", and that he had been denouncing racist insults for six years.

"I hope that this (campaign) can be an alert to ban this kind of attitude from football altogether. I hope the debate about racial prejudice will not fade away, but stays on permanently and not be restricted only to football," he added.

Lifetime ban

Reports suggest the suspect in detention may have had links to one of the Villarreal's youth teams, although the team has not commented on this.

In a statement earlier this week, Villarreal said the club "deeply regrets and condemns the incident".

Federer, who serves as an ambassador of Credit Suisse, recently paid a visit to its Zurich office, Tennis.si.com reported. Federer apparently strolled around the office by signing autographs and hitting some serves and volleys in a simulator. He also gave in for an hour-long "revealing interview" talking about the things that scare him and tackling on the topic of fame.

Federer said that spiders and other pests frighten him. He also revealed that he isn't at all fascinated about rollercoaster rides and extreme sports. "Spiders, I could do without," Federer said. "There are plenty of pests I can do without."

"Skydiving, bungee jumping, no way, not for me."

Yet Carlo Ancelotti, Cristiano Ronaldo,Sergio Ramos and, yes, Gareth Bale, sliced through it all with a performance of such swashbuckling brilliance that Bayern were reduced to a directionless mess.

It was in 2002 that Zinedine Zidane sculpted the volley against Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park to help Madrid to their ninth European Cup. The wait for the 10th has pushed the boundaries even of obsession. The narrative for Madrid has taken in too much semi-final heartache and too many managers sacked.

Super-heavyweightsThe expectation had been for a classic, for two of the game’s super-heavyweights to work each other to a standstill. Only one turned up. Bayern had beaten Real in four of their previous five European Cup semi-final meetings but this contest was effectively over with Ramos’s second thumping header before the halfway point of the first-half.

What followed, most notably the goals from Ronaldo, merely represented a savage turn of the knife and for Pep Guardiola and Bayern, it was a night of introspection, for wondering where their rampaging football had gone. Madrid believed that Bayern were vulnerable at the back. No one, though, could have predicted Bayern’s collective defensive implosion on a couple of early set pieces. Teams at any level, let alone the most rarefied, are not supposed to be breached like this.

Ramos was the beneficiary and how he revelled in letting off steam in front of the Bayern fans, who struggled to comprehend what was happening. Two years ago, at this stage of the competition, Ramos had missed the decisive penalty in Bayern’s shootout victory at the Bernabeu. His first goal came from a Luka Modric corner and if Ronaldo rose high in the centre, Ramos got even higher behind him, as Dante failed to stay tight. The header was too hot for Manuel Neuer to handle. Ramos’s second, though, was even better. From Angel Di Maria’s free-kick, Ramos reacted instinctively when the ball was flicked on to launch himself into a diving header that flashed home.

Even before the opening goal, Madrid looked threatening and Bale was off-target after Neuer had left his area to head clear.

Madrid pulverised Bayern in the first half and it was no exaggeration to say that it looked as though they might score with every forward thrust. It was remarkable to see how many three-on-three situations developed. Madrid’s runners bristled with menace. The only blot during 45 golden minutes for them was Xabi Alonso’s booking that rules him out of the final.

Brendan Rodgers learns never to underestimate José Mourinho's caution

For the first 45 minutes, you could be forgiven for questioning whetherChelsea realised a goalless draw suited their opponents. In the absence of Chelsea's usual fast-paced counterattacks – too frequently their initial pass out of defence was wayward – their primary offensive approach was winning set pieces high up the pitch. They put Simon Mignolet under heavy pressure from corners, with Tomas Kalac going close towards the end of the first half, and utilised César Azpilicueta's long throws.

But this was a safety-first approach. José Mourinho was aware ofLiverpool's stunning first-half record, and before half-time Chelsea did not concede a shot on target. Chelsea's approach was of more interest than the tactics – once the defensiveness was decided, the type of defensive play itself was obvious. With Luis Suárez up front, Chelsea defended deep to guard against his pace, and defended narrow.

The home side had plenty of possession – the game's top ten most prolific passers were Liverpool's ten starting outfielders – but little incision, with a midfield trio of Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen meaning Coutinho had to play higher up. The Brazilian and Raheem Sterling were wide in a 4-1-4-1. Both drifted inside but this narrowed Liverpool, who were reluctant to push the full-backs to the byline for fear of opening up the pitch to Chelsea counter-attacks.

Chelsea's opener, courtesy of Gerrard's slip and Demba Ba's composed finish, changed the scoreline, but did not alter the tactical battle. Chelsea's initial approach was certainly to get to half-time at 0-0, but they would have been forced to become more adventurous in the second half, potentially playing into the hands of Liverpool's direct attackers. Instead, their one-goal advantage ensured they were able to continue playing extremely deep.

Inevitably, Rodgers changed shape – from the 4-1-4-1 to a midfield diamond, with Daniel Sturridge on for Lucas and used up front alongside Suárez, with Sterling now at the top of the diamond. It did not cause Chelsea's defence significant problems, with the forwards crowded out and midfielders like Allen, Gerrard and Coutinho – now much deeper – given time and space.

Allen's play lacks penetration but he at least distributed the ball quickly, but Coutinho overhit passes and Gerrard attempted no fewer than eight increasingly optimistic second-half shots. There's a fine line between leading by example and attempting to accomplish everything solo to the detriment of overall team play – and the performance of Liverpool's captain, in his desperation to compensate for his error, strayed into the latter.

As Liverpool increasingly threw players forward, counterattacking opportunities presented themselves – André Schürrle and Mohamed Salah found life difficult, but substitute Willian continually motored forward on the break, eventually combining with fellow sub Fernando Torres for the clinching goal in stoppage time.

Mourinho's tactical blueprint was followed to the letter, but it's hardly the first time he's parked the bus. The real story was Liverpool's lack of a clear gameplan against that approach – Rodgers' tactical flexibility has been a crucial part of Liverpool's title charge, but he had no answer for this particular question. The only logical explanation is that Rodgers did not expect his opponents to play so defensively throughout a game they needed to win. But never underestimate Mourinho's caution.

It does not sound like the boardroom will listen to the dressing-room or to those in the stands who crave faith being placed in the inexperienced Giggs. United cannot afford a decision based on sentiment. It has to be made with cold detachment.

Yet those who have long believed Giggs will manage United one day will not have been surprised by how events unfolded against Norwich City. Giggs has the toughness to leave out friends, he has an understanding of the club’s playing ethos and an understanding of the game, influencing this match with one substitution in particular, sending on Juan Mata, who promptly scored twice.

Wasem, an amateur race-car driver, and his father Olivier have filed a criminal complaint againstFerrari SpA, claiming copyright infringement as they lost control of their site. Ferrari has sued the Wasems, arguing they misused the company’s trademark to advertise non-Ferrari merchandise and for personal messages such as invitations for Wasem’s 18th birthday.

“They dared to take away a kid’s dream,” Sammy Wasem said in an interview. “They have no scruples.”

The case is emblematic of the challenges companies have dealing with copyright and trademark rights on social media. In the years Wasem spent his adolescence building up a marketing tool for Ferrari, social media has grown up as well. Facebook Inc.’s revenue rose 55 percent to $7.87 billion last year.

“The issue isn’t with Facebook or with our fans but with those who try to use Ferrari’s intellectual property to make money out of it,” said Stefano Lai, a spokesman for the Maranello-based carmaker. The company hasn’t been informed of a criminal complaint, he said. The Wasems made no money selling merchandise on the site, Olivier Wasem said.
