Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey in the famous
television series Grey’s Anatomy, talked to PARADE about her experience on the
show and why she calls doctors “rock stars.”
On her Grey’s journey since season one.
“It’s been an incredible journey filled with learning. I’ve learned so much by watching other people — how they work, their behavior, what to do, what not to do. Actors are challenging people. This show has really been a test of endurance, but I think it gave me a lot of character to stick in there all these years because there are so many traps you can fall into in this town — ego-driven traps. I’ve tried to keep my head down and do the best work I can, and I think it’s served me well. I’m very happy and I’m very grateful for the show. But like a lot of things, everything comes full circle. In the beginning, it may be wild and exciting and fun, and then in the middle, sort of tumultuous and rocky and there are a lot of changes, and then hopefully your life comes full circle and you’re really happy and grateful for everything in the end.”

On whether she’s picked up any real
medical knowledge along the way.
“The truth is, I’m definitely more interested in the field, but I wouldn’t say you can learn things. Being a doctor is the hardest thing you can do. Twelve years of school, the pharmaceutical knowledge, the body parts, the Latin terminology, the memory retention you have to have. Doctors are serious rock stars, so I wouldn’t pretend to know even a tenth of what they know, but I definitely am very interested in what they do. I’ve been playing this character for so long, it spills over into my personal life. I’m very interested when someone I know has to go to the hospital for whatever reason. I always want to hear about their experience. Did they feel taken care of? Were there mistakes made?”

On Meredith’s too biggest loves: Derek and
Cristina.
“I relate more to a husband-wife relationship. I can’t really relate to a married woman having such an obsession with a female friend. I love my girlfriends. I have some great girlfriends, and I love them to death, but no one competes with my husband. I don’t know what guy would actually put up with being second in his marriage. Obviously, I love Sandra Oh, and I think she’s a brilliant actress. I just don’t think that their relationship is very realistic given that the character of Meredith is married and the fact that Cristina is married as well.”

On her favorite medical dramas.
“To be honest, I hated medical shows. They make me super anxious. I don’t particularly like medical shows at all. I never have. The show that was really big at the time for my generation — before I started Grey’s — was ER. That was on forever, but I’ve never seen one episode!”
