Apple's Win in Court Won't Hurt Samsung or Android

A U.S. District Court jury in San Jose, Calif., found that some Samsung devices had infringed on Apple's patent for "quick links," a feature that dials a phone number included in an email, and Apple's "slide to unlock" patent, for gaining access to a device. The jury will reconvene on Monday to determine whether additional damages are necessary for Samsung's infringement of Apple's "auto-complete" patent, which offers suggestions about how to change or complete a word during typing.
But the verdict is expected to have little impact in the marketplace. Legal experts and people close to the company said most of the infringing products are no longer sold, and Samsung is likely to implement alternative technologies for future models.
The verdict won't hurt Samsung financially either, even if it is upheld following likely appeals. The award of $119 million in damages amounts to roughly one-quarter of 1% of Samsung's $47.56 billion in cash. It is also a far cry from the $930 million Apple was awarded following an earlier trial—one of the biggest awards in patent-litigation history. Samsung has appealed that verdict.

HTC's biggest problem is CEO Peter Chou, say insiders

HTC is still in disarray. After staff departures, a troubled "Facebook phone" launch with the First, and dwindling revenue and profits, the company has turned to Robert Downey Jr. in a new ad campaign to help boost its brand and prospects. At the center of HTC's rise and fall is the company's CEO: Peter Chou. In a profile of Chou, who is now in his 10th year as CEO, Reuters has interviewed a dozen former and current HTC executives to explore his leadership and vision for the company's turnaround.
Chou is depicted as a quick decision-maker with an attention to detail, tendencies that sources previously told The Verge were a roadblock for the company. Both traits have clearly helped HTC in the smartphone market, allowing it to change directions on products quickly or create a concept for a new device in its range. Reuters tells of an offsite meeting two years ago where Chou sketched his plans for the design, price, and launch date of the Sensation XL just three months before its launch. Chou also allegedly inspected trays of phones at his desk, checking the balance, finish of the edges, and joints with what's described as an obsessive attention to detail.
This quick thinking and perfectionism let HTC respond well to market changes initially, but the competition has caught up. "It used to be a strength, and now is becoming a weak point as they don't have a clear direction going forward," says one unnamed HTC source. HTC faces stiff competition from Samsung, a company that dominates Android devices and builds a lot of the components used in its own and competitor's smartphones.

HTC Desire 816 now available in Europe for €295

HTC unveiled the Desire 816 at the MWC this year and after enjoying great success in China, the smartphone is finally ready to storm Europe. The company's latest mid-range offering has just hit Romania and will gradually go on sale across the other European countries in the coming days.
In Romania, the dual-SIM variant of the HTC Desire 816 is up for grabs for RON1,299 (about €295). Although, the Romanian version of the phone supports dual-SIM cards, this might not be the case with the variants sold in other European markets.
For your money, you will be getting a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The Desire 816 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with a 1.6 GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 305 GPU. There is 1.5 GB of RAM for trouble-free multi-tasking, while the 8GB of internal storage with the ability to expand it via microSD card will house all your content.

Rolls-Royce ‘Optimistic’ on Agreeing Energy Unit Sale to Siemens

Rolls-Royce Holdings Group Plc (RR/) said there’s a good chance that it will agree a sale of most of its energy unit to Siemens AG as part of a plan to revive sales growth and focus on businesses where it’s a major player.
“I’m reasonably optimistic that we’ll get something done,” Chief Executive Officer John Rishton told reporters at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in London, adding that the power arm is “sub-scale” and can’t effectively compete with either the German company or General Electric Co. (GE:US)
Rolls-Royce is negotiating with Siemens on the disposal of operations that supply equipment derived from its core aero-engine product line to the oil and gas industry and power utilities. Rishton said today that the move would improve the jet-engine maker’s focus as it seeks to revive growth that’s forecast to be flat this year for the first time in a decade.

Bill Gates second to Apple's visionary Steve Jobs.

Bill Gates beaten into second place by Steve JobsCNBC has compiled its annual CNBC First 25 list, profiling the people deemed to have had the most impact on business and finance. Despite having left the helm of Microsoft some time ago, Bill Gates still ranks very highly, although he is beaten into second place by none other than Steve Jobs.
Described by CNBC as "Microsoft founder and philanthropist", Gates has a "rare acumen for software development and technological innovation" according to the outlet. The site points out that Gates managed to become a billionaire by the age of 31, is currently valued at around $76 billion, more recently setting up the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation "with the goal of addressing problems in public health and education".
But it is the late Steve Jobs to takes the top spot. "Apple's iVisionary" is singled out for "fashion[ing] the experience of using the one we now carry around". Jobs is heralded for putting "an indelible stamp on the wider culture".
Other familiar names from the world of tech that feature in the list include HTC's Cher Wang (22), eBay's Meg Whitman (18), Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg (8) and Sergey Brin‚ Larry Page and Eric Schmidt making a joint appearance for Google (4).

Bill Gates reveals the deadliest animal around.

Ask 100 people what animal they think is the deadliest, and you will likely hear a range of answers. Tigers, lions, sharks, crocodiles, maybe snakes? Perhaps you even thought of humans? All of these would be incorrect, according to Bill Gates.
On April 25, he posted an infographic on his blog, Gates Notes, showing that the animal that kills the most humans each year is one that we've all encountered, and likely squashed. It's the mosquito.
"The number of mosquito-caused deaths really is a mind-blowing thing. Other than humans killing humans during periods of war, most years, the mosquito wins," according to the trailer for the Gates Notes' Mosquito Week.
It is not the actual mosquito that kills -- it's the diseases that they can carry. Malaria is the deadliest, leading to an estimated 200 million infections each year. More than 700,000 of those infected do not survive.
bill-gates-deadliest-animal.jpg
Mosquitos also carry the dengue fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, yellow fever, chikungunya virus, West Nile virus, Lymphatic filariasis, and Japanese encephalitis.
Beyond killing, these diseases leave millions of people worldwide out of work and unable to support themselves, especially in areas where healthcare is scant. Last week, Gates spoke to NPR about his mission to eradicate malaria, a priority of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
"I was stunned when I found out that malaria, when we got started [in 2000], was killing a million children a year; most of that's in Africa," he said. That year, his foundation gave a $30 million grant, becoming one of the largest funders in that area. "It was stunning to me that a problem of such magnitude wasn't getting huge focus... For Africa to move forward, you've really got to get rid of malaria."
It is a goal that was accomplished in the American South in the early 1900s, NPRreported in January. Gates hopes to do the same in the developing world. This year, GlaxoSmithKline is expected to bring the first malaria vaccine to market. In preliminary testing in African children, it prevented 941 cases for every 1,000 toddlers vaccinated.
"It's not a 100-percent-effective vaccine. But that looks like it will be a very helpful tool," Gates told NPR.
Other vaccines are being developed in labs around the world, including the PfSPZ vaccine created by Sanaria, Inc. in Rockville, Md.
Gates Notes will continue posting information about mosquitos and life with mosquito-caused diseases throughout the week. According to the graphic, sharks kill about 10 humans each year. Crocodiles kill 1,000; dogs, 25,000. Humans kills 475,000 fellow humans each year. Mosquitos kill 725,000.

Should You Buy An iPhone 5S Now Or Wait For The iPhone 6?

One of the most difficult decisions when it comes to upgrading your phone is whether you should purchase the newest model or wait for the next generation to come out.
That choice becomes even harder when you're dealing with the iPhone, since there seems to be a new rumor about the iPhone 6 every day.
For those wondering whether they should upgrade to an iPhone 5s or hold out for Apple's next smartphone, here are a few things to consider.

How Long Are You Willing To Wait?

Apple will probably release the next iPhone near the end of September, as it has done in previous years. If you're struggling with an outdated or broken phone and need to upgrade immediately, you may want to consider opting for the iPhone 5s right now.
Even though it might be dated in a few months, it's still a spectacular phone with a beautiful design, a fingerprint sensor that replaces your unlock passcode, and some noteworthy internal hardware improvements compared to previous models. However, if you're curious about seeing what Apple's next iPhone has to offer and you're completely satisfied with your current iPhone, it might be worth the wait.

Is Screen Size Important To You?

One of the biggest criticisms of the iPhone is that its 4-inch screen is still way smaller than those on most popular Android phones. This, however, is expected to change soon.
Apple is rumored to offer two new iPhones this year—one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a massive 5.5-inch screen. If you feel like you need a larger phone and you're not willing to make the switch to Android, waiting a few months may be worth it.

How Much Are You Willing To Spend?

If Apple does decide to release a 4.7-inch iPhone and a 5.5-inch iPhone, the latter will probably be more expensive. So if you're decision is hanging on whether Apple will release a 5.5-inch phablet, you should be prepared to pay a bit more than usual. Phablets are usually a bit more expensive than the average size smartphone. Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, for example, costs $299 on a two-year contract as opposed to the Galaxy S5, which costs $199 on a two-year contract.

How Much Does Design Matter To You?

No one knows what the next iPhone will look like, but several leaks claim to paint an accurate picture of what to expect from the iPhone 6. Rumors suggest the next iPhone will come with a thinner design and rounded edges, similar to that of the iPad Air and iPad Mini. If this sounds like a deal-breaker for you, it might be worth waiting.

Conclusion

In the end, the decision is based on what matters the most to you. If you're stuck using an ancient iPhone such as the iPhone 4, then upgrading now probably isn't a bad idea. The iPhone 5s will still be a great phone after Apple's next smartphone launches, and it's more than capable of handling your everyday needs. But if you're using a newer iPhone, such as the iPhone 5 or 5c, and are looking for something a bit bigger without switching to Android, it's probably worth the wait.

5 Tricks to Stand Out on LinkedIn

5 Tricks to Stand Out on LinkedIn1. Personalize your job title and summary. Don’t use the default job title as your headline, instead opt for one that is unique. It should be customized to include keywords that can help people find you. That means, no gimmicky titles that will ultimately render you unsearchable. For instance, my title is "Maren Hogan, Chief Marketing Brain at Red Branch Media.
I chose this title for a few reasons. Marketing is the keyword that will help people find the professional they are looking for. "Chief Marketing Brain" is my way of letting potential clients know working with me is fun. (That said, if you are just starting a new career or trying to find work, keep it as professional as possible and save the personality for the interview.) Then I include the unique name of my firm and a summary that highlights not only my activities, but HOW I achieved those things.
2. Become an instant influencer. If you’re using the right tools, creating and maintaining a LinkedIn profile, along with status updates, doesn’t require a ton of upkeep.
For instance, social-sharing software like Buffer or Sprout Social allows you to fill up a queue for the week or month and schedule publishing times and dates. You can hammer out shared LinkedIn content in just one cup of coffee over the weekend. Also if you select "Public + Twitter" from the shared with dropdown menu, you can automatically share updates.
The most popular LinkedIn pros also generate a mix of original content. This could be from posting blog-like posts on the LinkedIn Publishing Platform or from linking a SlideShare account to the network and posting content that way. Make sure to add a picture and a call-to-action like "please share" to every third or so post. Here are a few other ways to build up your credibility:
  • Share others' posts when you think they'll be relevant to your network's interests
  • Like posts from those who took time to craft them.
  • Join groups for your profession and also for your target market.
3. Throw away business cards. Well, throw them away after you make the connection. While I always recommend a personal email to important new contacts, I realize that sometimes that just isn’t feasible. Get through that stack quickly by connecting with them on LinkedIn with a short and simple note. You should also always customize your connection requests.
I would recommend writing why you want to connect with them. My most interesting interactions on LinkedIn have started with a genuine request or offer like: "I would like to buy you coffee and discuss working for your firm," or "Your blog post made marketing seem simple, can you show me how to do that?"
4. Make yourself accessible. Rule No. 1 of LinkedIn Club is make yourself so easy to find that users will virtually trip over you. A simple way to do this is to customize your profile URL. (Click here and the help center will assist you in claiming your vanity URL.) Other tips include:
  • Put "Connect with me on LinkedIn" badges up on your site.
  • Use the Slideshare integration to show off your most recent PowerPoint presentation.
  • Once a week, take a look at who is looking at your profile and introduce yourself to the most promising folks.
5. Use LinkedIn trending content and content score tools. Don’t have time to sort through it all? No one does. Use the trending content tool to weed through the posts and updates to find information relevant to you and your connections. You can also use this tool to gauge what topics might be hot to create your own content around. Then, you can use the Content Score Tool to find out how you’re doing and what you can do to strengthen your reach.
The more you invest in building and maintaining your LinkedIn profile, the more useful and effective it will become.

LG G3 launches 27 May, but is already 'late to the party'

LG is taking the wraps off its new flagship the G3 on 27 May -- but with the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 already in shops, one analyst says LG is "late to the party."
Invitations have been sent out to press inviting members of the fourth estate to simultaneous launch events in London, New York and San Francisco on 27 May. The following day there'll be similar events in Istanbul, Seoul and Singapore. The launches, a month from now, will introduce us to the follow-up to the LG G2 with a tagline quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To be simple is to be great."
lg-g3-invite-crop.jpg
"To be simple is to be great," according to LGLG
But is life good for the G3? "LG's product portfolio has improved immeasurably in the last 18 months across all price points," says industry analyst Ben Wood of CCS Insight, "but this has not translated into a meaningful improvement in sales to date. LG will be hoping that the G3 has more impact than its predecessor but that remains a tall order."

No fine for Motorola in Apple EU patent tussle, while Samsung agrees to play nice

European Commission competition commissioner JoaquĆn Almunia yesterday said that Motorola Mobility "abused its dominant position" over standards essential patents by threatening Apple with an injunction in Germany.
Tech companies can't make kit that complies with a certain standard — in this case GPRS — without using standards essential patents (SEPs). For a company's patent to be included in a standard, it has to agree to license it to other manufacturers on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms — in Motorola Mobility's case, that didn't happen, said the EC.
Motorola Mobility had initially agreed to license the patents under FRAND terms, and Apple signed up to use them under the agreement that, in the event of any dispute over licensing costs, the German courts would set the royalty rates instead. After Apple decided the rates Motorola Mobility wanted were too high and not in keeping with FRAND terms, rather than allow a third party to decide a fair rate, Motorola responded by threatening a patent infringement injunction that could have seen Apple unable to sell its phones in some European countries.
"Motorola persisted in using the threat of an injunction to force Apple into a settlement agreement with very restrictive conditions," Almunia said. As a result of the threats, Apple also agreed not to pursue the matter through the courts.
"In such a case, the recourse to an injunction cannot be objectively justified and may become an anti-competitive tool in licensing negotiations," the commissioner added.

Samsung launches Galaxy K Zoom with 20MP camera

SINGAPORE: Samsung on Tuesday launched Galaxy K Zoom at an event in Singapore. The device, a successor to Galaxy Camera 2, combines the features of a smartphone with a full-featured point and shoot camera.

K Zoom uses components similar to those in the high-end Galaxy phones and is powered by Android KitKat. The big difference, however, between the phones and the K Zoom is the imaging hardware. K Zoom uses a point-and-shoot size image sensor that can click photos in 20.7 megapixels. The design is also different. K Zoom weighs 200 grams and has a thickness of 20mm.

The device will be available in the different markets worldwide, including India, in the coming months, but for now there are no specific details on the India launch date or price.

"With the introduction of the Galaxy K Zoom, Samsung continues to demonstrate our commitment to creating products that meet the diverse demands of our consumers," said Sun Hong Lim, senior vice president of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. "The new Galaxy K Zoom (provides) all-in-one mobile experience."

Want inspiration? Here are the Steve Job's secrets.

1. Do What You Love, No Matter What It Happens to Be
"Don't settle ... as with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it," is what Jobs told Stanford University graduates in acommencement address in 2005. Gallo says cook-turned-talk show host Rachael Ray embodies this advice.
"Rachael Ray did what she loves," Gallo says. "She was giving cooking lessons at Macy's, for nothing! She was giving free cooking classes because she loved what she did."
2. 'Put a Dent in the Universe'
"Put a dent in the universe simply means that you have to have a big, bold, clear, concise vision. I like to say that your vision should -- fit in a Twitter post," Gallo says. Gallo referred to John F. Kennedy's "man on the moon" declaration: "We will put a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth by the end of the decade."
"John Kennedy, in 1961, had a clear, concise vision. If Twitter had existed that day, he could have tweeted it," he says.
3. 'Say No to 1,000 Things'
Simplifying his business was key to Jobs' success, Gallo says.
"In 1997, when he returned to Apple, Apple was close to bankruptcy. He took 300 products and condensed them to 10, within a two-year period," he says.
Simplicity also extended to Jobs' personal style, says Robert Cringely, who worked with Jobs since 1977.
"In latter years, he decided he would wear the same outfit every day, so that he, you know, didn't have to think about it, no one had to think about it, there were no decisions," Cringley says.
4. 'Kick Start Your Brain' by Doing Something New
Doing new things helped Jobs, in the word's of Apple's own slogan, "think differently."
"The inspiration for the Apple store came from the Four Seasons. That's why when you walk into an Apple store you will not find a cashier. You'll find a concierge. Walk to the back of the store and there's a bar. It doesn't dispel – dispense alcohol, but it dispenses advice," Gallo says.
5. 'Sell Dreams Not Products'
Jobs famously explained that the iPhone was not just a phone but a lifestyle.
6. 'Create Insanely Great Experiences'
"For Jobs, it wasn't just about selling 29 million iPads this summer but entertaining the customer at the same time," Gallo says.
Whether you run a multi-billion dollar tech company or a pizza parlor, innovation, he says, "means creating an experience for your customer."

Android may be Dominant, but it's Iphone, which is making the gains.

For the first quarter of 2014, the iPhone had more sales than android  in several key countries, including the UK, France, Spain, Japan, and Australia, said in an anonoymous  report released Monday. As one example, the iPhone's share of smartphone sales surged to 57.6 percent in Japan, up from 49 percent for the same quarter last year. The iPhone is actually the favorite among Japanese consumers, leavingAndroid in second place with a 41.5 percent share.
Over the past quarter, the iPhone snagged 42 percent of all smartphone sales on Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, 59 percent on KDDI AU, and 81 percent on Softbank, according to Kantar. Japanese consumers cited the phone's design and 4G capability as well as its expected reliability as key factors behind its appeal.
